Hairdressing and Barbering is an ever-evolving inspirational industry.
Academy No.5 strives on a daily basis, to ensure that as well as learning the basic art off hair that current style trends are also included in all hair education classes.
This has seen many Academy learners on competition of their qualification leaving with excellent commercial skills, moving into exciting careers all around the world.
From becoming mangers in the salons that they started as apprentices. Owning their own salons and Barber shops.
Brand ambassadors, Educators for world renowned product brands and to educators of the next generation of professionals.
Anyone can do an apprenticeship, from the age of 16. It is included in training or education requirement by the government.
There is no longer an upper age limit, ideal for anyone wanting to retrain or follow their dreams. This means you earn while you learn, with no student debt on completion! The apprenticeship wage changes yearly. Ask for the current rate or take look at www.gov.uk

As a subcontractor of Fareport Training Organisation, Academy at No.5 Ltd were awarded Grade 1 Outstanding as part of the hairdressing provision. Please see the notes from our most recent inspection here: https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk/provider/33/51815 See pages 16 and 17 of the 2011 report for Ofsted’s findings on the training we deliver.
We pride ourselves on the achievements of our learners. All learners together with their employers agree an Individual Learning Plan when training begins, with clear goals to work towards. When a learner has completed all elements required within their Apprenticeship, they sit their End Point Assessment or EPA, observed by an external examiner from our Awarding Body, VTCT.
We work on a day release basis with learners working in a salon environment and learning on-the-job, gaining real experience, and then learners attending training here at the academy for one day per week. Learners earn while they learn, benefitting from the best of both worlds.
When necessary, we are able to offer remote learning, with learners able to access online lessons either as downloads or via live online meetings. Academy at No.5 use Google Classroom making resources easily accessible whether you are at work or at home, or here with us!
A large number of our training programmes are government funded with a contribution coming from the employer, so no cost to the learner. Where funding is not available, our course fees are competitive and payment plans are available. Please note that any payments made are non-refundable.
All learners are responsible for supplying their own hairdressing equipment and stationery, lists of which will be supplied upon enrolment. Any learner struggling with this should speak to us and we will do what we can to support you.
Courses to meet all of your Hairdressing and Barbering Needs
All hairdressing apprentices now complete an End Point Assessment (EPA).
An EPA tests the knowledge, skills and behaviours that an apprentice has gained during their training. It is designed to take a snap shot assessment of the learners practical skills from colour to styling, customer service and health & safety.
The EPA confirms that the apprentice is occupationally competent.
Prior to enrolment, all candidates will be subjected to an Initial Assessment. This applies to all training programmes.
After an explanation of our training programmes, funding availability and an interview, we carry out some brief but essential tests. We will ask you to complete two questionnaires and two assessments; one in Literacy and one in Numeracy.
By identifying areas which may need support and the way you learn best, we are able to create a learning experience which meets your every need.
Our academy uses the Skills for Life Initial Assessment. There are two parts to this assessment; Literacy and Numeracy. Both must be completed so we can identify your strengths, and areas where support may be needed.
By doing this prior to enrolment, we have time to create an Individual Training Support plan, ready for when you start training. The assessment is usually done on the computer. However, if you are not computer literate, the option to take the assessment paper based is available.
These are multiple choice questionnaires. After working out which outcome you scored highest for, we can see how you like to learn and work best. There are no right or wrong answers to these questionnaires, just different styles!
“How Do You Like to Learn?”
This will identify which kind of learner you are; a Practitioner, an Explorer, or a Reviewer. We can then deliver your training in the method that will suit your learning style.
“How Do You Like to Work?”
This will identify which type of salon you may or may not be best suited to. Possible outcomes are Teamwork, Perseverance, Initiative and Enthusiasm. According to your preferred working method, we can direct you to salons that you will feel most comfortable working in.
You will be informed of each stage of enrolment along the way. If you are successful in gaining a place at our academy, you will be informed of your acceptance in writing, and you will be invited to attend induction.
Induction takes place over one day, before your training begins. You will meet your assessor, the rest of your group, and you will be taken through your Candidate Handbook.
Health & Safety will be covered, and we will put together your Individual Learning Plan. You will also sit a Diagnostic Assessment. This is taken at the level you achieved for your Initial Assessment. Rather than give you a grade, the curriculum is broken down into skill areas. Your results will indicate whether you are Emerging, Consolidating or Established in each of these skill areas. Emerging means you will need support, Consolidating means you have some skills but may need encouragement and Established means you have no support needs.
This helps us to further analyse your learning strengths and your learning needs, enabling us to tailor your programme exclusively for you as an individual.
